Thus far we have considered two Advent themes, and heard testimony from our members about Hope and Peace in their lives.  This week we will consider the third Advent theme of Joy.  Christian practice over the centuries has called this Sunday “Gaudete Sunday,” a time of Joy in contrast to the somewhat more subdued lessons in Advent.  In fact, John the Baptist’s rather strident call for repentance last Sunday stands in contrast to the Joy we have over the salvation that Jesus brings and which we celebrate at his birth.  The rose candle signifies this Joy.  It’s often called the Shepherd’s Candle, because it reminds one of the message of the angel to the shepherds abiding in the fields with their sheep:  “Do not be afraid; for see---I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.”  (St. Luke 2:10).  This is also what Paul had in mind when he wrote to the Philippians:  “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say Rejoice.  Let your gentleness be know to everyone.  The Lord is near.”  (Philippians 4:4-5).  Indeed, the Lord is near, as one more week remains in our Advent season.  May you find Joy in contemplating the coming of the Lord Jesus---not only on Christmas, but every day in your life.

THIS SUNDAY DECEMBER 14TH IS A BIG DAY!  BSLC is holding TWO SPECIAL CONGREGATION MEETINGS to help secure the financial future of our church.  

The first meeting is to vote on a balanced, non-deficit revenue and expenditure 2026 Mission Plan, and the 
second meeting is to vote on the installation of solar for our church complex which will provide low-cost 
energy for the future, and we will receive a $61000 cash rebates from the IRS.  Don’t miss your chance to voice your opinion on these critical issues!  
Join us in Werner Hall after worship at 10:15 for coffee and refreshments before the meetings begin.
