But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. - Matthew 6: 33
That is Jesus' answer to concerns about food and clothing.
Abraham Maslow, a social psychologist from the mid 20th century published a "Hierarchy of Needs." At the bottom were physiological safety needs. At the top were things of "self-esteem" and "self-actualization."
It is hard to strive for personal improvement, when you are hungry all of the time. If you are constantly afraid and threatened, it is difficult to focus on studies and art and culture.
Anyone who has worked with people in generational poverty sees that all of the time. Students who don't know where they are sleeping or what will happen after school are not worried about homework and reading lists.
So, is Jesus telling people to ignore those needs for the kingdom?
Or is there something about the kingdom of God and God's righteousness we are missing?
If we pay any attention to Jesus, we constantly see him stopping to heal, feed, and support. He even tells us that caring for "the least" through feeding, giving water, visiting, clothing, etc. was doing it "to him."
The kingdom's focus is on the care of its members in all ways.
That is why we need to focus there first.
We have to focus on the kingdom, and not on the "I"dom.
Righteousness in the kingdom is about showing care for all your neighbors. It is not about a private, personalized morality that affects only yourself. It is about living in such a way that others are loved and cared for, just as you are.
