I invite you to read the story of Jonah and then reread the Gospel for this Sunday. (Matthew 20:1-16)
God's forgiveness of the Ninevites in Jonah caused a great deal of distress to the prophet.
He is upset because God turned from the wrath that Jonah was expecting to see given to them, and instead gave them the same thing he gave Jonah- forgiveness. Grace.
In the parable for Sunday, Jesus tells the story of vineyard workers.
He recounts how some started work at the start of the day, some later in the morning, and some late in the afternoon.
When the owner paid out the wages, he paid them all the same.
The ones who worked all day were upset that they didn't get more.
The owner replies:
‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? 14Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. 15Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ 16So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
(Notice that the envy and covetousness of the workers who came early removed the joy they would have had when receiving their pay.)
Notice how Jonah in the fourth chapter throws a fit about how the Ninevites came to 'the faith' late and yet were given the same thing he was. God asks him, "Is it right for you to be angry?"
Notice Jonah's response.
Then read God's response that ends with a question.
Notice that the owner of the vineyard basically ended his response with a question as well.
Maybe, instead of questioning God's forgiveness, we should give thanks for it in our lives, and then share that same good news with others?
As recipients of grace, may we share grace.
