For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2 Corinthians 5:1, ESV
We take a side-excursion on our walk Following Jesus on The Way to consider...
Home.
What do you call home?
As you may know, I’ve been living in a temporary home for the last three months since I moved to Tucson. I’ve been getting settled into place here at Beautiful Savior through all your wonderful welcome and grace as I’m learning your names and faces and backgrounds and gifts and talents. And learning about our place: what’s “The Alcove” and I wonder what’s behind this door here? While on the “homefront” I’ve been staying with family while house hunting. A wonderful home but hard to feel settled when it’s temporary.
This week that search is complete and I’m moving into my new home. I’ll be living just 10 minutes from our lovely church campus. I’m so looking forward to being part of the neighborhood!
Which has brought to mind the sense of home in general. When do we feel at home? Some live in the same location for decades but never feel “at home.” Some have never felt at home in their own bodies. Some have a roof over their heads but do not feel safe in it. All too many have no roof over their heads, at all.
What constitutes feeling “at home?”
Jesus said, “Live in me, and I’ll live in you.... I am the vine, you are the branches...” (See the Gospel of John, Chapter 15.) The life of Jesus in me, in you, brings us together in love—gracious love, Christ’s love that brings the peace that passes all understanding. The love and community that brings us through unsettled times, even frightening or dangerous times.
The love of God in Christ Jesus is our true home, now and always.
