On this first Sunday after Pentecost, we hear two stories: Isaiah's call story in Isaiah 6 and the story of Nicodemus coming to Jesus in John 3. Two different stories that illustrate more of our walk of faith.
Isaiah - God's glory is shown in the pivots shaking and the Temple filling with smoke, with seraphs in attendance.
John- Nicodemus comes under the cover of darkness to question Jesus away from the crowds and everyone else.
Isaiah- He is being called by God to go out and proclaim.
John- Nicodemus is a teacher responding to an urge to learn more about what he has been proclaiming!
Isaiah- He thinks he is unworthy to be in God's presence, and God acts to show him that he is worthy.
John- Nicodemus is a member of the Council, a teacher, and yet he still feels he can only approach Jesus at night, and Jesus reminds him of the Bronze Serpent and how all who looked upon it were saved.
In these stories we are reminded: That it is God who makes us "worthy." That we are called to learn and go out to proclaim. That God will meet us where we are, and how we need to be met, to make it happen.
That it can be with big things, and simple conversations, that God's call and love is shown.
That God gives, so we can share.
May we respond, “Here am I; send me!”
