We are saddened to share word of the death of Beautiful Savior worshipper Gerald R. Kleinfeld. Returning from a cruise, Kleinfeld became ill with an infection. He passed Sunday night, Aug. 16, at a California hospital. He was 89.
Kleinfled was a retired professor, consultant and lecturer specializing in German and European political issues, German-American relations and international affairs. He served as a retired professor of history at Arizona State University and as a visiting lecturer in Germany and other European countries.
He regularly attended Beautiful Savior and participated in several activities. The former college lecturer frequently was called to read the lessons for the day. David Shaffer, whose own soothing voice is a key part of the choir's bass section, was lector Sunday. He opened by saying he wished Gerry was still here to read four pages of text of lessons. "His deep resonant voice compelled us to listen, whether we wanted to or not," Shaffer said.
Gerry organized and led a wonderful tour of places where Martin Luther lived and preached in Germany, which a number of people from multiple Lutheran churches were able to enjoy & learn from Gerry expertise.
Donations may be made in honor of Gerald (Gerry) Kleinfeld to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.
There will be a reception following the Memorial Service in our fellowship hall.
